Sometimes you do not need another lesson. You want someone to send a recording to and say, “That transition finally worked!” You can look for piano-playing friends at any level. A shared interest does not require identical technique or music qualifications.
First, decide what you want to do together: talk about music, play duets, work out songs or prepare small performances. A clear invitation makes it easier to find someone with similar expectations.
Where to find other musicians
Start with your teacher or music school. Ask about student gatherings, ensembles and small concerts. You will meet people who already make practice part of their lives, and a shared lesson can be the beginning of a friendship.
Online, try music forums, local groups and chats. IMSLP, for example, has a community forum. For local searches, try “İstanbul piyanistler”, “Istanbul amateur musicians” or “Istanbul musicians group”. Check when the group last had active conversations and whether members meet in person.
Go to concerts and open music events. İKSV's programme is one way to follow Istanbul's music scene. Its Genç Caz+ programme supports musicians under 28 through a selection process. It is not an open jam session or a permanently open application scheme; check current conditions with the organiser.
How to start a conversation at a public piano
If someone is playing, wait until they finish. Ask about the piece or mention something you enjoyed. Then briefly explain your interest: “I play too, and I am looking for someone to try some easy duets with.”
Do not begin by correcting their mistakes. Not everyone wants to discuss technique, exchange contact details or perform together. If the conversation goes well, suggest one small next step.
Plan your first session together
Choose a specific piece, key and manageable difficulty level. For a piano duet, agree on the parts in advance. For improvisation, settle on at least a chord sequence and tempo.
Half an hour with a clear goal is enough for a first meeting. Check instrument access, whether joint playing is allowed and any costs beforehand. Discuss video recording before you begin, too.
How Piyano Bul helps
Use Piyano Bul to find a piano location for your meeting. Read the description and reviews, then arrange any necessary access with the venue. The map helps with the practical side of getting together: where to meet and play.
You do not have to organise a concert immediately. Start with one piece together and decide whether you would like to meet again.
Open Piyano Bul and find a place for your first musical meetup.
