How to stay motivated to practise piano more often

Published: · 2 min read

Sometimes the hardest part of playing piano is opening the lid. You know you should practise, but another difficult passage is waiting and you have little energy after work. It can help to rethink the task instead of adding guilt.

Ask what is getting in the way. Do you dislike the piece? Are you unsure how to tackle a difficult section? Is there no convenient time, or no instrument? Each problem needs its own solution.

Make the start small

Try committing to ten or fifteen minutes. This is an example of an approachable start, not a compulsory daily target. A short session is easier to fit into your day, especially when you already know what you will do.

Replace “I need a serious practice session today” with “I will work on the transition between these two chords.” If you want to continue afterwards, do. If not, the session still achieved something.

The learning service flowkey also recommends regular short sessions. But “15 minutes is always better than two hours” is too absolute: the task, your attention and the quality of the work matter.

Make room for music you love

Alongside your assigned piece, keep something personal: a film theme, a song or a tune from a game. Find an easier arrangement if necessary. It can be enjoyable now while the more difficult version remains a future goal.

Give your session both focused work and free playing. You might practise a small section first, then play something you already know. Not every moment at the keys needs to test your ability.

Make progress easier to notice

Record a short passage for yourself once a week. Compare the same section: is the rhythm steadier, has a hesitation disappeared, is the melody clearer? A recording gives you a specific point of comparison.

If you want company, arrange to exchange occasional recordings with a friend without grading them. “Here is what I am working on” is enough. Browse concert listings for inspiration. In Istanbul, one source is İKSV, which organises the city's music and jazz festivals.

Change the setting when you want something new

Try a familiar piece in another room or on a different instrument. An audience is optional. Listeners may encourage one person and add unwanted pressure for another.

Find a suitable location in Piyano Bul and plan a small musical outing. If you need a quiet corner today, choose that rather than the busiest café.

Open Piyano Bul and find a place you want to visit for the music.
